BREAKING NEWS

January 6, 2026

Schenectady, NY — The City of Schenectady has announced a comprehensive initiative to identify and eliminate lead service lines across the city, reinforcing its commitment to public health and infrastructure modernization. The effort is part of a broader federal mandate to remove lead pipes nationwide and ensure safe drinking water for all communities.

City officials report that approximately 96% of Schenectady’s more than 21,000 water service lines are currently classified as “unknown,” meaning their material composition has not yet been confirmed. This significant data gap highlights the scale and urgency of the project.

“Like many older cities, Schenectady faces the challenge of aging infrastructure installed before the risks of lead exposure were fully understood,” said Mayor Gary McCarthy. “This initiative is about protecting our residents—especially our children—and ensuring a safer future.”

Protecting Public Health

Lead exposure is known to cause serious health issues, particularly in children, including developmental and neurological effects. While city officials emphasize that Schenectady’s current water supply meets safety standards, proactively identifying and replacing potential lead sources remains a top priority.

Community Involvement is Key

The success of the initiative depends heavily on community participation. Residents are encouraged to:

  • Inspect visible water service lines in their homes
  • Report pipe materials to the city
  • Schedule free, non-invasive inspections if needed

These steps will help the city build a comprehensive inventory and prioritize replacement efforts.

Local Partnership Supports Effort

The city is partnering with A.M.T.A.E Solutions, a local disadvantaged business enterprise, to assist with inspections and data collection, further supporting economic development within the community while advancing the project.

Phased Implementation Plan

The initiative will be carried out in multiple phases:

  • Phase 1: Data collection and inspections
  • Phase 2: Identification of lead service lines
  • Phase 3: Replacement planning and execution

Project timelines will depend on confirmed findings and the availability of state and federal funding.

Federal Alignment and Long-Term Impact

This effort aligns with national regulations aimed at eliminating lead service lines across the United States. With federal funding expected to support these projects, Schenectady is positioning itself to proactively address infrastructure challenges and safeguard public health.

About the City of Schenectady

The City of Schenectady is committed to maintaining high-quality public services, investing in infrastructure, and ensuring the health and safety of its residents through proactive initiatives and community partnerships.
